Types of Eyelash Extensions: Where to start!

There are so many different types of eyelash extensions that come in a variety of thickness, curls, and lengths, it can be difficult to know where to begin. We’ve put together the definitive guide in your search for which curl, length and type will accentuate your look!

What are Eyelash Extensions?

Individual eyelash extensions are designed to be added directly on to natural lashes using an adhesive. Usually, one lash extension is added to one natural lash. Each individual lash extension is designed to resemble natural lash hairs, tapering from base to tip. They have a curl, just like natural lashes, and are also similar in weight (depending on the thickness and length). The purpose of single lash extensions is to extend the length of the natural lash, whilst also adding curve and thickness.
Nouveau Lashes Individual Lash Extensions are made from a blend of high-quality synthetic materials; this makes the lashes beautifully shiny and creates a curl that lasts. We do not use mink as a product in our lashes.

Choosing the Right Eyelash Extension

Lash extensions vary in length, thickness, and curl. When it comes to choosing which eyelash extension types are best for your eyes, your lash artist will work with you to create a completely customisable look , following our Weight for Weight guidelines.

Lash Length

The length of the lash extension used is dependent on the length of your natural lashes and the look you are wanting to achieve. A variety of lash lengths will be used across the eye to enhance the natural lash growth pattern, create symmetry across both eyes and to flatter the natural eye shape.

Lash Thickness

In classic lash extensions the thickness of the lash extension is closely matched to the thickness of the natural lash. During a volume lash treatment multiple finer lashes may be used to create a fuller look however, in order to maintain healthy lashes these should not exceed the total ‘weight’ of the natural lash.

Lash Curl

Curl refers to the type of curl that a lash extension has. The greater the curl, the more dramatic your look!

• The J Curl is a natural curl, very similar to the average curl found on natural lashes. Not suitable for those with downward-pointing lashes.

• The B Curl is fairly flat at its base with a curved tip. Suitable for a more natural look.

• C Curls has an effect similar to lash perming and will create an open-eye and more dramatic look.

• D Curls will give a very dramatic look. It’s a great lash extension curl for the outer corners of the eye for a lifting effect. Not suitable if you have heavy eyelids.

• The L+ Curl is very flat at the base which curves suddenly. Can be used to achieve a lifted, dramatic effect if you have very straight natural lashes or heavy eyelids.

How to pick the right eyelash extension for my eyes?

Different eyelash extension types will help define and accentuate certain eye shapes. We’ve put together a handy guide below to help you:

Round eyes

If you have round eyes, your lower lash line may have a pronounced curve. You’ll want to reduce the emphasis on roundness, so opt for weaker curls (B’s and C’s) at the inner corners of your eyes and stronger curls (D’s) on the outer corners.

Almond eyes

Almond-shaped eyes are longer in width, so any lash curl will work well! If you’d prefer your eyes to appear larger, opt for longer lash extensions in the middle of the eye lid for an open-eye look. For a feline eye, choose longer eyelash extensions for the outer edge of the iris.

Hooded eyes

With hooded eyes, you’re unable to see a visible crease above the eye socket, so choosing lash extensions which increase emphasis on the upper lash line works well. C or L curls are great options for this eye shape to achieve a beautiful lift.

Wide-set eyes

With wide-set eyes, the space between the eyes is wider than the length of one eye; the aim is to make your eyes appear closer together. Your lash artist will apply more lashes to the inner third of the eye to create density, with a strong curl in the centre (such as C or D) and shorter eyelash extensions towards the inner and outer corners, to create symmetry.

Close-set eyes

For close-set eyes, the space in between the eyes is smaller than the length of one eye, so the aim is to make your eyes appear further apart. Your lash artist will apply more lashes (strong C or D curls) to the outer third of the eye, creating the illusion of space at the inner third.

Classic Eyelash Extensions

Classic lash extensions are individual eyelash extensions that are applied 1-on-1 to your natural lashes to add depth and length. Classic lashes are a subtle enhancement for those wanting to achieve natural looking eyelash extensions.

Volume Eyelash Extensions

Volume eyelash extensions are used by your lash artist to create fans that give a full, bold look with a uniform top line. Volume extensions are more delicate and finer than our “classic” extensions, creating a fuller and softer appearance.

A Nouveau Lashes Global Volume Artist will create a customisable, bespoke volume lash look that is tailored your eyes.

Hybrid Lash Extensions

Hybrid lashes are a excellent choice for those looking for a fuller “classic” lash, without the dramatics of “volume” lashes. A Hybrid lash extension treatment is a combination of volume and individual lash extensions that creates a spiky, textured, structured finish to your lashes. Volume fans create fullness, while classic lash extensions are used to create ‘spikes.

How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Last?

Eyelash extensions can last up to 8 weeks with regular infills every 2-3 weeks. Lash extensions will fall out with your natural lash cycle, but it’s super important to use the right aftercare to help them last as long as possible.

Which Eye Lash Extensions are Most Popular?

Our most popular lash extensions amongst customers are C curls, 0.15mm thickness in 6-14mm lengths. Our technicians recommend the A C curl, providing a little more drama and lift whilst creating an open eye look, without being as full glam as a D curl. Using multi-lengths makes it easy to create a range of tailored lash looks, especially the in-demand treatment, Hybrid Lashes.

What are the Pros and Cons of Eyelash Extensions?

Eyelash extensions save time when you’re getting ready; they can last up to 8 weeks and there’s no need for you to coat on layers of mascara or struggle with strip lashes when you have beautiful, fluttery lash extensions. To maintain their beauty, lash extensions require regular infills every 2-3 weeks so be prepared for more frequent trips to the salon.
